The real steam-engines

new 20-10-2014 SSN 2015.

As I said on another page, I love the steam engines. Sometimes I have the opportunity to take a photo. You will find some of the results on this page.

The NS (Railway company of the Netherlands) is a merger of the HSM (Holland's iron railway company) and the SS (Society for Operation of State Railways). It started as a cooperation of the both private railway companies around 1920 with support of the government and ended in a merger in 1938. A lot of the older material, sometimes beautifully restored, is in the official railmuseum in Utrecht: the spoorwegmusem. (The railwaymuseum)

Steamloc NS 2104 (former HSM 504), a 2 B loc, was build in 1914 for the HSM by the Berliner Machinebau AG vormals L. Schwartzkopff in Berlin. After the competing company SS started to use much stronger 2 C engines for fast passenger trains, the HSM couldn't stay behind. Because of the smaller HSM turntables they designed a shorter 2 B locomotive. Max weight pro axle 17 tons and the largest driving wheel in the Netherlands (2100 mm). Nickname: "Blikken Tinus" (Tin Tim) because of the rattling sound of the rods. Out of service in 1954 as the last of her series.

Steam Locomotive NS 3737 (ex SS 731) was built in 1911 for the State Railways by Werkspoor in Amsterdam. Type 2'C. The locomotives of this series were delivered in the years 1910 - 1920. Designed by the SS, to the British example, to capitalize on the growing body of heavier passenger and fast trains. This machines had twice as much power as the series 801 to 935, and therefore received the nickname "Jumbo". This series has for years been the main puller of fast trains in the Netherlands. Locomotive 3737 (from depot Roosendaal) rode on January 7, 1958 the last official NS-steam train to Maliebaan Station in Utrecht, where the Dutch Railway museum is.

SS Steam Locomotive 13 (ex-NS 705) was built in 1864 for the State Railways by the factory of Beyer, Peacock & Co Ltd. in Manchester. Type 1'B and used for passenger trains. In the years 1930-33, the whole series was discarded and only the SS 13 was saved for for the museum. Originally, these locomotive had 2-axle tenders. The current 3-axle tender is submitted by the SS 8. Is the oldest remaining Dutch locomotive and is back in the delivery status of 1864.
