The digital sound system from Sony is not as popular or well known as the digital
systems from Dolby and dts, but inspite of this the Sony format has quite a lot to
offer. It is the only format with a dedicated 8 channel surround system (7.1 to be
exact), where Dolby Digital and dts use 6 (5.1). The Sony system adds 2 additional
front channels, making the full channel line up front-centre, centre-left,
centre-right, front-left, front-right, surround-left, surround-right and an
LFE sub-woofer channel.
At the moment SDDS is a theatre format and it is not available to the home
cinema market.
