dts-ES

The dts-ES format is a sound system for movie theatres that includes as additional surround-centre channel matrixed within surround-left and surround-right. The extra channel allows more accurate placement and steering of sound accross the rear soundstage.

The dts-ES decoders used in home cinema systems have decoding options for utilising the extra channel, in addition to processing existing 5.1 channel surround sound:

dts-ES Discrete - A only true 6.1 channel format that includes a discrete surround-back channel encoded from an original 6.1 master soundtrack.

dts-ES Matrix - The additional surround-back channel is matrixed within the surround-left and surround-right stereo channels, just like Dolby Digital Surround-EX. The Matrix soundtrack will replay through non-ES decoders as a 5.1 channel soundtrack. The decoder can be used to create a virtual rear-centre channel from 5.1 soundtracks.

dts NEO:6 - The dts-es decoder can be used to create a 6-channel surround mix from any normal two-channel stereo source, or from four-channel surround soundtracks, in a similar way to Dolby Pro-Logic.
