Mono

Mono sound is a single channel of audio. The first sound recordings were mono and until the seventies mono was the main sound format for television broadcasts. Movie theatres used mono sound until the roughly same time, although many has upgraded to the new multi-channel analogue formats.

Today, mono is still used in certain applications. Basic, small screen televisions with a single speaker use mono, as do small audio divices where sound quality is not really a factor. Conversley, mono is used in some of the best and most expensive hi-fi and home cinema systems. Using a series of monoblock amplifiers on the separated stereo or multi-channel soundtrack channels, improvements can be achieved by reducing interference that can affect integrated stereo amplifiers. It allows a 'cleaner' audio signal to be used with less interference from other electrical components.
