Alanis Nadine Morissette was
born on 1st of June 1974 in Ottawa, Canada. ![]()
Her parents (Alan and Georgia Morissette) called her Alanis because they wanted her to have a name that looked like her fathers. Alanis Morissette has got two brothers. One twin brother called Wade and an older brother called Chad.
Alanis spent most of her first eighteen years in Ottawa, Canada. She went to kindergarten in Laar, Germany, where she lived for three years, speaking German fluently. After graduation from high school she briefly moved to Toronto. In less than a year she moved to Los Angeles.

At a very young age she started singing and playing the piano. But she knew that when she wanted to become a real star, she needed more. Thats why she started to play, at the age of ten, in the television program You cant do that on television. With the money she made she brought out her first record: Fate stay with me at the age of ten. Very soon she left the television show to concentrate on her music career. In 1991 she brought out her first album: Alanis. Alanis was a mix of pop orientated songs and some ballads. The album was a success in Canada. She sold over 100.000 copies. The consequence was that she got a Juno Award (the Canadese Grammy) for Most Promising Female Vocalist. In 1992 Now is the Time was brought out. Not such a success as Alanis but it still sold over 50.000 copies.
Meanwhile Alanis moved from Toronto to Los Angeles. In 1994 she met Glen Ballard. They decided to work together and the result was Jagged Little Pill. The first song that was released from the album was You Oughta Know and it became a big hit. In the summer of 1995 Jagged Little Pill was released. You Oughta Know could be seen on every popular music program on television. After You Oughta Know Alanis Morissette brought out Hand in my Pocket and All I Really Want and her album stayed in Album Charts top 10. This resulted in 6 nominations for the Grammy Awards. With the release of Ironic everybody in Europe went crazy for Alanis Morissette. She decided to do a tour in Europe.
In 1998 she released Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie which was a success despite the fact Alanis had changed her stile. Instead of a more angry album she had made it a more spiritual album.
At the end of 1999 she released another album recorded at the MTV music awards. It was called MTV Unplugged. The album is still quite a success.
Ofcourse everybody hopes that the newest album will be brought out soon, but its probably going to be released at the end of 2001. We all hope it will be as great as all those other albums! (But it probably will be ofcourse!)
The end of 1999 also gave us something else. The movie Dogma. Alanis portrayed God in this black comedy. (Dogma: Alanis Morissette is God). The main characters in the movie were Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. If you havent seen it yet: you really should go see it!!.. The soundtrack of the movie includes the new song Still.
During the first part of 2000 Alanis joined the play 'The Vagina Monologues. Alanis performed for two weeks along with actresses Shirley Knight and Andrea Martin. Every show Alanis played in was sold out. The play was based on thousands of actual interviews with women of many ages, nationalities and background, discussing their vaginas.
A new Alanis Morissette cd is on the way.. It will probably be called 'Under Rug Swept'!
