Sorrowful mystery: The agony in the garden. And He came out, and went, as He was wont, to the mount of Olives; and His
deciples also followed Him. And when He was at the place, He said unto them: "Pray
that ye enter not into temptation". And He was withdrawn from them about a stone's
cast, and kneeled down, and prayed: "Saying, Father, if Thou be willing, remove this
cup from Me: nevertheless not My will, but Thine, be done". And there appeared an
angel unto Him from heaven, strengthening Him. (Luke 22,39-43) |

Sorrowful mystery: The scourging at the pillar. They led Him unto Pilate and they began to accuse Him. And Pilate, when he had
called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, said unto them:
"I have found no fault in this man". And they cried out all at once, saying:
"Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas". And Pilate gave sentence
that it should be as they required, and he released unto them him that for sedition and
murder was cast into prison, but he delivered Jesus to their will. (Luke 23,1-25) |

Sorrowful mystery: The crowning of thorns. Then
the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto Him the
whole band of soldiers. And they stripped Him, and put on Him a scarlet robe. And when
they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon His head, and a reed in His right
hand, and they bowed the knee before Him, and mocked Him, saying: "Hail, King of the
Jews!". And they spit upon Him, and took the reed, and smote Him on the head.
(Matthew 27,27-30) |

Sorrowful mystery: The carrying of the cross. And as they led Him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, and on him
they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus. And there followed Him a great
company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented Him. But Jesus turning
unto them said: "Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for Me, but weep for yourselves,
and for your children, for if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in
the dry?". (Luke 23,26-32) |

Sorrowful mystery: The crucifixion. And
when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, they gave Him vinegar to drink mingled
with gall, and when He had tasted thereof, He would not drink. And they crucified Him. Now
from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour, Jesus cried
with a loud voice: "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?", that is to say, "My God,
My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?". Jesus when He had cried again with a loud voice,
yielded up the ghost. (Matthew 27,33-46) |
