The Amaryllis or Hippeastrum, as this beautiful plant officially is called has its roots in the South American/Caribbean area.

The plant flowers in different ways:

	With small flowers, flower diameter +/- 10 cm
	Large flowers, flower diameter + 20 cm
	And all sizes of flower in between.

On the moment 50 varieties are grown on commercial basis.

These varieties are mostly the large flowering types. The small types have only a small share.
