Piet Brijs - Winter vacation 2007 and before
|
|
In the winter of 2000 we visited Flachau (Austria Salzburgerland) again.
Excelent snow conditions.
After many years of cross country skiing in Flachau we went in the year 2001 to Fiss (Austria, Tyrol).
The weather was a mixture of (too) high temperatures, low temperatures and snow.
Enough snow for cross country skiing.
The fresh fallen snow invites you for a walk with the camera.
In the winter of 2002 we tried Fiss again. As in a larger part of the Alpes,
the conditions were very poor for cross country skiing in January.
No matter the conditions, we did enjoy ourselfs.
In 2003 we went for the third time to Fiss (Austria, Tyrol).
We were lucky: it started snowing in the week before our holidays .
The fresh fallen snow on the trees was beautiful.
The weather was a mixture of snow and sun. It was getting colder every day.
At the end of the week it was -14 degrees Celsius in the morning.
Enough snow for cross country skiing.
As usual, we were the guest of the family Kathrein in "Haus Sunnbichl".
The year 2004 has lots and lots of snow for us.
I think I never saw so much snow in my life.
And again, we were the guest of the family Kathrein in "Haus Sunnbichl".
Since 2004 was a very good year in Fiss, we decided to visit Fiss again for our winterholidays in 2005.
We were lucky. Just in time it started snowing.
A large part of Austria suffered from traffic jams and avalanges,
caused by large amounts of snow. The area around Fiss had lots of snow too, but it was managable.
We had 5 days of sunshine and three days of snow.
The overall temperature was very low (-10 or less degrees Celsius in the morning). Nothing to complain about.
Since we had a lot of snow in Fiss the last years, we decided to visit Fiss again for our winterholidays in 2006.
We had sunshine, clouds and a few centimeters of snow.
The overall temperature was below zero (Minus 8 Celsius in the morning, around zero in the early afternoon), so we had excelent conditions.

In 2007, as everywhere in the Alps, snow conditions were very poor. When we arrived in Fiss, there was hardly any snow. The reason was a very high temperature (+10 Celsius at 1.500 meter, combined with rain. The zero degree line was at 2.500 (or higher) meter during the day and most of all, the lack of snow.
We seem to be very lucky. In the night from Monday on Tuesday it started to snow and the temperature went down to minus 17 in the night. So Tuesday morning the world was white again. When we left on Saturday, it was still snowing. No extreme snow showers in our area.

In 1999 there was snow everywhere and excelent
conditions for cross country skiing. For the first time in my live I had to
drive with non-skid chains. On the picture a look at the village of Flachau.

In 2000 the conditions were even better. Lots of snow, a sunny, cloudless sky.
Very cold, -20 degrees celsius in the morning.

On of the fascinating things about Fiss is the difference of heights between the level of Fiss
(1.500 meter above sea level) and the Inn valley below (is 850 meter above sea level).
On a day like this you can see the clouds in the
valley passing by. Strange effects.

Selma.
Selma, one of our granddaughters, had here first skiing lessons.
As always on Friday: the closing sessions with a skirun, honouring of the participants, a certificate, a medal presentation and a meet and greet
with Berta. Berta is the mascot and logo of the "Kinderland" (Children's country) in Fiss.
Of course, all watched and cheered by the parents and grandparents.
